Digitizing the analog trains

The trains from SpoorObjecten are currently (October 2024) only offered in analogue form, so you still have to work on making them digital yourself.

Don't panic, Gerard from the N-track forum provides text and explanation so that you too can digitize a train!

____________

The hood can be removed by unscrewing the four small screws on the bottom. They do not have to come out completely.
Then you see, in the middle, the motor with a silver weight on both sides and 2 copper-colored contact springs that run from under 1 of the weights to the motor. I took the pictures after the conversion, but imagine the decoder and the wires gone;

Remove the weight on the side of these contact springs. This is fixed with 2 tabs in the chassis. So carefully bend the chassis a little with a screwdriver.
Then you see that the contact springs of the motor make contact with the 2 silver contact strips that run lengthwise through the chassis. These make contact with the wheels and therefore with the rails.
By bending the 2 copper contact springs of the motor all the way up, to the top of the motor, the contact between the motor and the contact strips or wheels is broken.
The orange and gray wires from the decoder must now be soldered to the motor contact springs.
The weight can now be replaced. Check that the contact springs do not short circuit with the weight. Better yet; put some insulation tape between them.

I glued the decoder, in my case a Train-O-matic, onto the other weight.
And then soldered the red and black wire from the decoder to the long contact strips.

It looks like this:

I'm not doing anything with the yellow and white wire for the front and tail lights yet. But I do plan to install front lights later.

It's harder to describe than it actually is.
